If you’re a new or relatively inexperienced vaper, you’ve probably been impressed watching other vapers take hits, only to release massive clouds of vape. People who vape with the intention of creating these massive clouds are known as “cloud chasers.” These vapers use specific devices and techniques to get the biggest, most flavor-rich clouds they can on each hit. One of these techniques is called sub-ohm vaping. Simply put, this is vaping on a device with a coil that has a resistance of less than one ohm.
First, a bit of physics! The resistance of a coil is defined in ohms and describes the amount of current that passes through the coil. Standard coils have a resistance of between 1 and 3 ohms, while sub-ohm coils have less than 1 ohm. When you keep the voltage constant and reduce the coil’s resistance, the current increases, which makes it hotter and produces much more vapor.
It’s important to note that, while sub-ohm vaping is generally safe, you’ll need to take more care than you may be used to with a standard mod and ohm combination. Decreasing the resistance will increase the amperage within the device, adding strain on the battery and increasing the amount of heat generated. It’s critical that you never exceed the amperage limit of your battery.
Although the coil resistance is the main determining factor in sub-ohm vaping, there are two other factors that have an impact on the overall experience.
Most vape mods use at least one 18650 lithium-ion battery. The voltage range for these batteries is between 3.7 and 4.5 volts. When considering your mod, consider the type and number of batteries needed. As the resistance in your coil goes up, you’ll need more energy (and more batteries) to get the same wattage.
Wattage is the term used to describe the power output by the device. Higher wattage devices tend to produce more heat, more vapor, and more flavor.
Of course, huge clouds are probably the number one draw of sub-ohm vaping, but there are a few other advantages to consider over standard vaping:
● Sub-ohm coils vaporize a lot of e-liquid at once, so you get a ton of flavor with each puff.
● If you enjoy warmer puffs, this is easier to obtain with high wattage/low-ohm coils.
● Because it requires more airflow to cool down the device, sub-ohm vaping works best with direct-to-lung inhales and provides much more airflow.
Sub-ohm vaping isn’t ideal for beginners, but with time, research, and practice, you can be blowing big clouds in next-to-no time.
